Amy Butler Curtains

Done ;) I just finished these lined tab curtains for the guest/computer room in our new home. I used Amy Butler fabric and the Lovely Lined Curtains instructions from Molly posted on PurlBee.com. http://purlbee.squarespace.com/lovely-lined-curtains/ The instructions were easy to follow and the curtains were simple to make. I even found the AB fabric on a great sale while visiting my parents on the East Coast. I just made one curtain per window due to their slender width. I am thrilled with the outcome! ;)

And that's OK with me ;) My Hubby took me to a really cool rooftop bar and restaurant above the Nines Hotel for a glass of champagne. It was such a great spot with amazing views of the city.

Birthday Flowers

I'm not sure what it is about flowers from a Husband. It's like magic. Flowers from my husband have healing powers, the ability to make me feel happy and beautiful and most importantly they make me feel important to Him. I love the smile on my face in the picture above. I am a little shocked when I see it because I don't think I've smiled that way for a long time. Thank you Hubby, for the amazing flowers on my 30th Birthday. I love them so much, just like I love you!

So, we bought a little house in the Hawthorne District. I really like this area. It is a lot more casual....we are still in walking distance to plenty of restaurants, bars and shops. The house is pumpkin cute. Built in the 1920's it's complete with a very squeaky wood floor and a clawfoot tub. I love it here. The lot is larger than most in the neighborhood and there is a well established garden that I only plan to change...a little bit ;) More pictures to come!

Goodbye, Pearl

It was a great few months in the Pearl District. But I was not sorry to see it go. Maybe it was the living situation, maybe it was the time of year, but the Pearl area never felt like home. We rented a little apartment in the Honeyman Hardware Lofts. Loft living was a tough adjustment coming from a large 4 bedroom 3 bathroom house. It was also very noisy. I think we just got burnt out on the situation pretty quick. I don't think I've ever packed so quickly! But, I'm sure we will be heading back to the area soon enough. Although the scene is pretty expensive in that area it is also a lot of fun. It'll be the perfect 'Special Occasion' destination in the future.

New Orleans

New Orleans is a paradise for everyone. Photographers, music lovers, artist....eaters. It seems like every time I'm there I return home about 5 pounds heavier. Po'Boys?...Sounds good. Muffuletta?...Sure. Etouffee, Jambalaya, Gumbo, Boudin, Beignets? Yes, Yes, Yes.....YES!!!! Ugh. But, it's all quite worth it. We are usually a bit rushed when we visit. I hope to go sometime with more time to spend in the many cemeteries, walking in the streets, taking in a few jazz shows, everything!

Numbers

I am not sure why I love taking photos of numbers. When I see numbers above doors, on buildings, signs, mailboxes, I feel compelled to look a little longer. If I have a camera with me, I will take a picture almost every time. The 617 1/2 picture is my favorite in the bunch. The '1/2' makes this particular numbered picture unique from my others and I rarely see a fraction used. This picture was taken in Rock Springs, WY where my brother lives. Maybe I should collect them all and put together a series, in no numerical order. ;)

My First Tiffany!!!!

If it weren't for my friend Lisa, my designer accessories would be nonexistent!! I would not own a COACH clutch or COACH star key chain and never in a million years would I own this beautiful Tiffany star ornament!!! This star will be hanging around me for all days of the year, not just around Christmas time. I can't wait to find the perfect spot! Thank you Lisa for such a thoughtful and amazing gift, you know me too well!

We had such a nice Christmas!! Even though we are a bit misplaced. My biggest surprise was the ring my Mom sent me. I soooo love it! When I have it on it makes me feel like a Princess! Thanks, Mom. My Hubby got me the Screen Printing kit which I am so excited to check out, no fabric or piece of paper will be safe!!! He and my mom also picked me up Hello Kitty figurines. They are a limited time offer and I have only seen them sold at one location. There are 12 different figures per set, and I just love them! I don't really get into toys for the most part but I have always had a soft spot for Hello Kitty. I first saw these awhile back when I was in Vegas and I've been hooked ever since! They are packaged in foil so you don't know which one you are getting. I've had a few repeats but, I don't mind one bit!

How nice, Portland ;) My mom and I were walking around the Alphabet District when we came across this sign in a window. I think it was the neon sign paired with the sparkling disco ball that really grabbed my attention. As if it really was placed there for me! ;) So far, I am loving Portland, especially the weather. People kept telling me I'd hate the rain, but constant sunshine can be just as irritating. I'm happy for the change.

OK....so...I have been known to change my mind here and there. After further research, I have found that the Holga camera is actually what I want. The Holga is cheaper, maybe a bit more user friendly. I love the array of filters and this kit comes with a flash that provides multiple images in one frame...can we spell...F....U....N...?!?!?!?!? I also want to add that this kit is called the Lunatic Pack. Love it. ;)

Shrimp Can Mean Thanksgiving!!!

Lemon Shrimp Ravioli With Green Salad...breaking the typical Thanksgiving Day tradition. Right up my alley!! ;) In all reality, we had an early TG Day with family so, when it came to the actual day, we were quite over turkey. Instead...I prepared this creamy, lemony, shrimpy, yumminess. Maybe next year I will fix a more traditional Turkey Day Feast.

Finding My Way Back To Knitting

I have not knitted for awhile....I think having my Mom around helped me find my knitting needles again...actually, I'm pretty sure of that. So...I am currently working on a Daisy Stitch Scarf. The Daisy Stitch is 4 very easy rows to repeat. I love the results. Once again...my Mia is my biggest fan, supporting my every stitch.

Last thing I need, everything I want!!! I have been eyeing the Starter Kit or, maybe even the Hong Meow Kit for some time. When I went to the website to drool over those two kits I discovered they now have the Diana F+ Deluxe Kit. It includes everything!!! The kit leaves nothing to be desired!!!!! What the French, Toast....why must I be tortured?? When I get my next job I will buy this for myself, as a 'good job' treat. They want a pretty penny for this kit-o-wonderfulness. The only thing I truly don't like about this camera is that there are no digital capabilities. But...I can figure it out another way ;)

I really need to finish it up already!! I stopped working on this quilt after I hurt my knee. I had to unfortunately change up some of the fabrics I picked out online last minute. That is the trouble with ordering fabrics sometimes, you just can't tell what the quality is gonna be. So...it's not exactly how I intended it to be but, I really like it. Once I get settled again I plan to finish this up ASAP, I can't wait to start using it!

Surgery is Not Fun.

I had ACL surgery 3 weeks ago. This picture was taken about 3 days after. When we unwrapped the bandages it took a lot for me not to burst into tears...'that's my knee?!?!' We snapped some pictures for progress reasons and I quickly hid it beneath the bandages. I took a week off work and iced. Although I took my fair share of painkillers, I found the best medicine was a very attentive Mia. She laid right by me all day, sometimes right by my knee. She is such a sweet girl.

Quilt for Mason, handmade by Grandma. What could be better? I'm so proud of my mom for putting this together and the results are fantastic! She tied it, which I love....I want to try doing that with my next quilt. The colors are great. The orange stuck in there reminds me of my brother and since this is for his son...it seems more than perfect.

Weekend in Bodega Bay

What didn't we do?? We played on the beach, took in a little movie history, went wine tasting, drove along the coast. It was a great weekend! We didn't have too much time for tasting so, we just went to Ferrari-Carano and Dutcher Crossing. FC is more about checking out the amazing grounds, it is so beautiful there! The house, the gardens, the garden statues, and huge basement oak barrel room were truly top notch. The FC family owns a casino right here in Reno so, we felt a little compelled to check them out ;) Next we went to Dutcher Crossing where we didn't taste wine but sampled their ports and dark chocolates....YUM!!!! We usually pass on ports because they'll bring your day of wine tasting to an end. But since it was already the end of the day we went for it. Ports by themselves are not my favorite....but the staff was so friendly and helped us properly combine the dark chocolate and port for a really different expierience.

Wrist Warmers for Sarah

Wrist Warmers, Wrist Warmers, Wrist Warmers....not the easiest thing to say 5 times fast! Or type for that matter. I put together these wrist warmers for my sister in law. I kinda made up the pattern myself so needless to say...there were a few problems. They still turned out OK but the seam on the inside is pretty bulky. I knitted them flat and misjudged how large they actually were. Next time I'm using a pattern and knitting in the round!! The yarn...I love it...is Lorna's Laces. Yes, it's expensive but well worth it. I chose it for this project because it does not pill...perfect for wrist warmers.

Virginia Quilt

I keep forgetting to post about this quilt! This quilt is my official first quilt. I took a quilting class last November that I wouldn't repeat. It was only one day, for about 5 hours. I was nowhere near finished with the quilt by the time the class was over. So, I was left to figure it out for myself. As a beginner, that was no easy task! I really liked the top and bottom, totally dissapointed with the binding. I struggled like you would not believe with the binding! I gave this to my parents for Xmas and told them to use it and abuse it!!
The pattern was called "Garden Magic" from Sew on and You're Done by Evelyn Sloppy. It is a great book, I reach for it often for tips and tricks.

I signed up for another quilt class.
I'm not totally sold on the quilt pattern the class will be using but, I am sold on these fabrics!! It all started with the latest purl newsletter that featured the bottom fabric. It is called Sweetheart Bandana by Alexander Henry. I liked it so much I just decided to stick with it as a base for my quilt. I can't wait to get started!!

Not as Hard as I Thought

I finished my first baby quilt over the weekend. I decided to hand stitch the binding to the back. Since this quilt is small in size I figured I wouldn't get too frustrated. It was time consuming but not difficult. Now, I'm afraid I'll have to do all of my quilts like this because I love the hand stitched look. My corners are neat and tidy and you can't even see the stitches on the back. I'm pretty happy with the results. I was going to give this to my new Niece but, she was already given an adorable handmade quilt from the very talented Jesse. So, I think I'll keep this one on hand for a gift or who knows....maybe for my baby one day! ;)

Baby Sweater Done!

Wool worry no more. I posted earlier about this project because I was concerned about the softness of the yarn I picked. Actually, there was no softness to it! After the sweater was done I hand washed it in a lovely lavender wash for fine knits. It softened up like a cloud!!! I was so relieved!! The semi-transparent white ribbon at the neck added the cutest touch...I hope my new Niece will enjoy wearing it. ;)

It's too small!!! Arg! Oh well, it was great practice. I was not much of a rib knitter but, now I am! There is a lot of ribbing in this pattern. The collar/border is K2P2 and the WS of the body is K1P1. The RS of the body is a P1, slip1, P1 with the yarn in front. It creates a mock rib and looks really good. I will definitly try this project again. But not until after the Hourglass Sweater. ;)

Bobble Leaf Scarf

I just love that word..."Bobble" Knit a bobble. Fun stuff. This is the Bobble Leaf Scarf from Loop-de-Loop. I made this for my mother in law for Xmas. I used 1 skein of Lorna's Laces. It is a beautiful yarn to work with, very soft and cozy too. I made a demo of the scarf with a much cheaper yarn and I did make a change to the pattern for the final scarf. The pattern says to make a leaf then to pick up st on the cast on edge of the single leaf. From there, you knit the length of the scarf which then flows neatly into the 2nd leaf. In my opinion the two leaves looked quite a bit different...and the transition was not as smooth into the first leaf as it was into the second leaf. So, to fix this I knitting 2 lenghts + leaves. I picked up from the cast on edge of my first length and leaf to start the second length and leaf . I was much happier with the results.

Turkey Day at Pyramid

My husband and I camped at Pyramid Lake for Thanksgiving. It was great! We packed along our little Mia who had the best time climbing around on the rocks. I kept referring to her as "Jungle Kitty" so when it came time to look at the camera for pictures she just wouldn't do it. I think that was her way of getting back at me ;) The picture on the left shows how the wind would swirl dried clumps of dead grass anchored in the sand around and around in a circle. These little swirls were everywhere and it was really beautiful to see!

Double-Wide

I made this little kitchen towel for a friend. A designer here in Reno came up with a line of clothing called, Reno Envy. Very popular with the younger crowd. The Reno Envy logo is a trailer, sort of like the one above, and is printed on everything from trucker hats to girl's tights. They don't have any home items which are what I'd be most likely to buy so, I made my own. Hand embroidered with decorative rick-rack. The perfect accessory for any Reno home.

What more could a girl ask for? My husband and I went to Pensacola last weekend for a wedding. We met family down there and stayed in an amazing apartment with an incredible view of the beach. The weather was a little touch and go at first but it cleared up beautifully just in time for the beach wedding.

Martha Stewart has the cutest quilt pattern from Joelle Hoverson's latest book, Last Minute Patchwork + Quilted Gifts, in her fall magazine. It is very simple, but does involve some hand quilting. I think that is what I like best about the look of the quilt. I chose a large repeat fabric by Kokka Fabrics for the front and a zig-zag pattern for the back. I figure I can follow the zig-zag pattern on the back for the quilting part. The idea is to give this to my Niece but, I'm not sure if her parents will like this particular fabric combo. We will see. I've been wanting to make a quilt for years but have not been able to decide on a pattern or fabric combo...but I think I've finally made a decision...I can't wait to get started!

Wool Worry

I'm a little concerned about the yarn I'm using for my Niece's sweater.
The pattern suggests Jaeger Matchmaker but, it's not the softest. I chose this yarn over the others suggested cause it was on a mega sale...I figure I'll finish it up regardless of the feel and add in a onesie to be worn underneath. This sweater is so itty-bitty that I'll be done with it in no time! The hardest part so far was the cable cast on I used because the edge is a K1,P1 rib. Not the easiest cast on method but, the stretchiness is really nice and it looks very clean and neat.

A friend, Seema, had the most amazing wedding. The food, the traditions, the music, her incredibly beautiful Sari Dress, the colors, did I mention the food?!?! It was so fun. She even had a Henna party a few nights before where all of us got a Henna Tattoo. I loved mine so much I wanted a real tattoo of it....for a minute :) Her groom rode in on an all white horse with drummers and dancers, she came in under a beautiful scarf held by 4 of the most gorgeous men I've ever seen. It blew me away...loved it!!!!

Unattended Needles.

So, I pick up my circular shrug last night
and found that it is not a good idea to leave my knitting on the couch where furry little somethings can get to it. Luckily, Mia had no interest in chewing the actual piece in progress. I really like to knit with wooden needles but, I might have to make a change over to the metal needles to avoid suffering the consequences if I don't get my knitting properly tucked away one day.

She's at it Again!

Mia loves wine! We took her downtown for a walk and stopped for a glass of wine at the River Tap House. Mia would not leave my glass alone! You would have thought I had a chunk of steak in that glass!

Done! The funny thing about this pattern is that I can either whip it out within a few hours, or days. This time it was days. I didn't think I'd get this bag done at all, I had to rip seams a total of 6 times! I hope she can use it. The fabric is Amy Butler. My favorite fabric shop was a little low on options so, this fabric combo was not my first choice. They had the fabric I wanted but no possible liner options, I was bummed but, I'm happy with the final results...I hope she is too!

VA Wifit

I have not posted about my hobby lately.

Honestly, not much has been going on with it. I get so distracted by other hobbies it's too difficult to stick with one. Let's see....at the moment I am knitting a scarf, starting another tote for my sister-in-law, embroidering a plain jacket, still trying to finish my cherry blossom bag, I'm knitting a circular shrug, and maintaining a happy home, work, and social life...and I've recently tossed 4 days a week at the gym into the mix. I went to the gym before but since I've started to creep closer and closer to my 30's I've noticed some big changes in my body (hey...I've never jiggled there before!!). My eating habits (which are already a bit odd at times) and my workouts have quickly found themselves at the top of my priorities list. But I don't mind, challenges keep me on my toes.

P is for Portland

My hubby was spending quite a bit of time in Portland for work. I finally had a chance to go up and meet him for the weekend. I loved Portland. The weather was rainy, chilly, wonderful. I really miss the rain sometimes. I can't even recall the last time it rained here. My most favorite part of Portland aside from all the green was the Alphabet district. Lots of cool shops, places to eat, people out and about with their dogs...we had such a great time.

Bye Bye Brown Guac

So, you've spent time and effort chopping avocados, tomatoes, green onions, and adding the right amount of the right spices to get your guac just to your liking. Then before you can even share your perfected creation with your dinner guests the guac has developed that unsightly/unappetising brownish color. Well, I've got a solution. Instead of tossing those avocado pits into the trash, toss them into your mixture....wah-la...green guac for days. Granted, the pits in your guac can be a tad unsightly themselves, so I always try to arrange them in a flower shape to help with the presentation. Give it a shot!

Bag Update

Gettin' there. OK, so I didn't get the tote shape I was shooting for. Because this is the first felted project I've done I was not sure what the felting would do to the original piece. I should have cut down my cast on stitches by half and continued the rounds sans increases and decreases. Next time I'll remember. But..I'm pretty happy with the results anyway. I need to stitch everything down, add the handles and the lining on the inside. I'm trying to decide if I want to place in a zipper or a magnetic button. I think I might place the magnetic button underneath the lining so that it will be hidden.

I would recommend this kit to anyone. I did get stuck a few times but fortunately had some wonderful helpers (thanks Joe and Angel!!) I need to get this wrapped up so I can get moving on my mom's scarf!

Why I Love to Knit in the Evenings

I can't help but want this time with Mia. I love that she sits right by me and sleeps while I knit. It makes me feel overwhelmed with love. My husband laughs and says I get the biggest smile on my face during this time...it makes me laugh too.

I hope she likes it! My Mother-in-Law will be coming in tonight from AK for a quick visit. Her birthday was just this past Sunday so, I made her a tote. I picked up some more AB fabric from my favorite little fabric shop downtown and...done! I lengthened the straps on this tote (thanks mom and Joe) and I think this change will remain throughout the rest of my totes. The next bag will be for my sister-in-law. Her B-Day is in September so, I have plenty of time to find a really neat fabric combo for her.

Peju. Opus One. August Briggs.

Ahhh, Napa Valley. Love going to Napa Valley. These are just a few of the wineries we visited. Peju was OK. I would recommend visiting that particular winery for their lovely gardens and building. The interior was nice and they had a huge stained glass mural in the tasting room that was really well done. Nice gift shop too...no need to taste the wine. Opus One. Let me see...this is how my tasting went down at Opus One.
First sip: Huh...I think this wine might be a bit overrated.
Second Sip: Gee, I really wish I had not just spent $35 dollars on this glass of wine.
Third Sip: Mmmmm...I wish I was still standing out front of this winery because the building is
far more interesting than this glass of wine.
August Briggs. We love AB. We joined their wine club on this past trip. Their wines are so yummy and the people that work there are so friendly and down to earth. We are planning a trip back in the fall for their wine club members party. Can't wait.

Sew Success!

Alrighty, I'm patting myself on the back. Not just because I've made these two cute and functional totes but because I've found my way back here. It's been awhile since I've posted. Training the pup has been keeping my eyes on her and off my hobbies. But it's worth it, she's becoming quite the little lady. This tote bag came from a book I'll have to add in later. I did change one thing to the pattern and that was the outside pocket. The pattern called for the pocket to be inside the bag but, that left the front a little too blank for my liking. So, I flipped it. Since this bag is now sewing up fast for me I'm going to do the next few in linen with screened prints, illustrated by...me. I'm a little concerned about the weather heating up because my sew room is in a little attic type room off the master in my home...when summer hits it quickly turns from sew room to furnace room. I need a fan....fast.

Mia Loves Beach

Although I live in a town where all you can eat sushi restaurants adorn every block I still like to roll my own. Well...I guess I like to make one roll...my all time favorite, The Spicy Tuna Roll. I have the freedom to make it as spicy as I wish. I only use half sheet of Nori and about 1/2 cup filling. That gives me a nice one roll...not too big, not too small. The filling is a mixture of mashed up Tuna, Siracha, green onions and Mayo. I know, I know...but it gives it a creamy texture and really smooths out the Siracha spice. I'm makin' myself hungry!!

I designed a logo(left) for a guy I found on Craig's list that seemed nice and legit. I never heard anything back from him even after a revision I made to the design per his request. A few weeks passed by and I checked his website to see if I could get contact info and found a terrible knock off of my logo....right. Moral of the story...I don't search on Craig's list for freelance work anymore. This was only one of the three rip off designs I experienced there.

I illustrated it in Illustrator for a little t-shirt contest on craig's list about a year ago but, I never heard anything back. Oh well...I'll just make it into a t-shirt for myself ;)

Backside
I wanted to add in this picture of the backside of my Wifits. They get a little corset treatment that I think is really cute. I just recently started to add this to the critters and I really think it gives them a nice finish. It added quite a bit more work but, I think it's worth it.

“Traveling, Swallowing, Dramamine”

My husband and I went on a cruise with some friends not too long ago. It was great, it really was. By far the most relaxing vacation I’ve ever had. One thing I will say is to not allow anybody to tell you that you can’t feel the boat move. Cause you can. Very much so. The second night I went down hard with sea sickness. Thank goodness for Dramamine!! Straitened me right out. One of our stops was in Jamaica (picture) where we hiked up waterfalls. It was so lovely! Don’t turn down a cruise because of ‘what you’ve heard’, try it. Everyone had something negative to say to me about my cruise vacation….but they were all wrong. ;)

My next door neighbor just had a baby girl. So, I decided to make one of those no sew fleece blankets as a little gift. I used a cream color for the front and a soft pastel pink for the back. I also added embroidery for a personal touch. The blanket turned out so soft and fluffy. I'm thinking I'll have to make a big one for myself one day!!

I just love sublimestitching.com. I embroidered these little tea towels on the left. I've really started to collect several and I have been wondering just what do with them. Thanks to Martha Stewart Magazine I decided I can use them to wrap bottles of wine for great gifts....right. I always like to take a bottle of wine along to parties or dinners and it's OK....but taking a bottle of wine wrapped in a hand embroidered tea towel is extra special. Or, at least I think so ;)

I wanted to add in this Baby Wifit. Free of buttons and made with a soft white chenille on the front. I also added the baby themed patch. This one is a little different for me. I think I'd have to modify the felt eyes a bit before I loved them. For the most part, she is pretty cute. My friend gave this Wifit as a baby shower gift and said the woman really liked it...that made me happy.

Tonight my hubby is working late...well, real late. So, I ate some dinner and knitted a few rows on my sweater. While doing this I got a crazy urge to shove my mouth full of chocolate. Obviously my salad dinner left me feeling a little unsatisfied. But, instead of indulging away on chocolate I'd have a rough time working off at the gym, I decided to go with an International Foods Vanilla Spice coffee. I dug out this pretty tea cup and saucer that I just love. It is so dainty and special. As I sat on the couch, relaxed and sipped my Vanilla Spice coffee I realized how much I really appreciate simple pleasures.
